Gorgeous romantic Russian song, sumptuously arranged by Irina Walters. An old man sees himself in a bare, frozen maple tree - and reminisces about youth. Tenors and basses take the lead in introducing the melody, which then passes to the sopranos. Rich four part harmonies are accompanied by a flowing and impassioned piano part.

We supply both the original Russian lyrics - with full pronunciation guidance including transcription into the Latin alphabet and an MP3 file - and also an English version.

You, my barren maple, cold and frozen over,
Standing in the snow-storm, stooping in the whiteness:

Have you seen a shadow, have you heard a rumour?
Why do you go limping out beyond the village?

Like a drunken watchman, stumbling on the roadway,
Drowning in the snowdrift, both your feet are freezing!

Ah, I’m tipsy too now, faltering and failing,
Can’t get home alone now when I go carousing.

There I met a willow, there I saw a pine tree,
Sang to them of summer in the snows of winter.

Seemed to me that, like you, I was now a maple,
Not so bare or bending, firm and green all over:

Longing for a lover, young and hot and heedless,
Reaching round a birch tree, full of foolish yearning.
