One of a set of seven delightful psalm settings by Heinrich Schütz (from Opus 5, Becker Psalter settings) in fresh English paraphrases. Schütz's psalms are tuneful, rhythmic, easy to learn, and useful throughout the year.
A guide to the liturgical use of the psalms is included.
Words
How long, O Lord? O Lord, how long? Will you forget me evermore? How long until you cease to hide your countenance, and grace restore? How long shall I your counsel seek, With only sorrow in my heart? How long, then, will my enemy mock and oppress me round about?
Look down, O Lord, and answer me. Kindly enlighten, Lord, my eyes. Let not my eyelids close in sleep lest then in death I fail to rise. Let not my enemy declare, “I am the victor o'er this day!” Nor let my foes rejoice because I fall and stumble on the way.
My hope is found in you alone. I dwell in your abundant grace. My heart exults, for you have giv'n rescue from evil time and place. So let me sing unto the Lord, Who has done marvelous things for me. Let me give glory to His name who was, and is, and is to be.
