William Soutar, one of the most talented of the 20th century Scottish Renaissance poets, was an invalid for most of his short adult life. He also wrote many poems for children. This delightful lullaby is full of open vowels and softly alliterative consonants. Over a gently rocking accompaniment by lower voices, the sopranos carry the melody.

The recording is by Rudsambee Company of Singers, directed by Frances Cockburn, on the album Bottled At Source (RUBEECD003).

Other William Soutar settings published by Canasg include Ballad and Sang.

Lully, lully, my ain wee dearie:
Lully, lully, my ain wee doo:
Sae far awa and peerieweerie
Is the hurlie o' the world noo.

And a' the noddin pows are weary;
And a' the fitterin feet come in:
Lully, lully, my ain wee dearie,
The darg is owre and the day is düne.

William Soutar
