The Dublin cries

Performance time approx: 2m 30s

This piece is part of the set "Rounds from Jane Chattock's book".

The set also includes:

This charming round, based on Dublin street cries, is one of many found in a small music manuscript book inscribed with the name of Jane Chattock. The book, which came to light in a second-hand bookshop in Edinburgh, is dated November 1832, and the entries are in many different hands, suggesting that Jane invited friends and visitors to add rounds to her collection.

Because of the wide vocal range, we suggest a performance scheme in which each voice sticks to one line of the music. Details are given in the purchased edition.

Come buy my cherries, beauteous lasses,
Fresh from the garden, picked by me.
All on a summer's day so gay you hear the Dublin cries:
Knives ground here by me.

Fine apples and choice pears:
Come, boys, forget your cares.
All on a summer's day so gay you hear the Dublin cries:
Sweep, sweep, sweep, sweep.

Fruit in abundance sold by me,
Fruit in abundance here you see.
All on a summer's day so gay you hear the Dublin cries:
Fine parsnips, fine carrots and choice beans.

Whey, fine sweet whey.
Come, taste my whey.
All on a summer's day so gay you hear the Dublin cries:
Fine radish, fine lettuce sold by me.

Anon.
