Ave Verum Corpus is a Medieval devotional poem, attributed to Pope Innocent VI, and traditionally sung during Holy Communion.
The Latin prayer Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is based on the Angel’s salutation to the Virgin Mary, recounted in the gospel of Luke.
Ave verum corpus
Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine:
Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine:
Cujus latus perforatum, fluxit aqua et sanguine:
Esto nobis praegustatum mortis in examine.
O Jesu dulcis! O Jesu pie! tu nobis miserere.
Amen.
Medieval devotional poem, attributed to Pope Innocent VI.
Translation
Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary,
Who has truly suffered, and was sacrificed on the cross for mankind,
Whose side was pierced, whence flowed water and blood,
Be for us a foretaste (of heaven), during our final trial.
Sweet Jesus, merciful Jesus, have mercy on us.
Ave Maria
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum:
Benedictus tu in mulieribus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.
based on the gospel of Luke.
Translation
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Now and in the hour of our death.
Amen.
