Andrew Wilson-Dickson

Andrew Wilson-Dickson has spread his musical net wide, from keyboard playing to teaching, conducting and writing, but since the age of about 16 has always thought of himself primarily as a composer. He has written three operas, much chamber and choral music, and music for Christian worship. He has recently been working on a number of concertos for period baroque instruments, including for flute, recorder and.harpsichord. His music has been heard at the new music festivals in Bangor and the Vale of Glamorgan. In 2014, the Welsh Camerata gave the first performance of his 80-minute oratorio Karuna in Cardiff, written especially for the choir. The work is due to receive its second full performance in 2016 in London.

Alongside his compositional activities, Andrew has long experience of conducting and directing instrumental and vocal groups. Andrew came to Wales from university teaching to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1984, where he became deeply involved in historical performance (known in those days as ‘early music’). During this time he founded the Eighteenth Century Singers and Players, then the Welsh Baroque Orchestra and the Welsh Camerata to provide resources in Wales for the performance of a wide repertoire of early music, from Machaut to Bach and beyond.  His recent reconstruction and composition of Bach's St Mark Passion emerges from this environment.

His book 'The Story of Christian Music' (1992) is a product of his involvement for many years in church music. It has sold worldwide, translated into more than a dozen European and Far Eastern languages. For more information visit: www.wilson-dickson.co.uk.
